Otherwise known as Muurarimestari in Helsinki takes a renewed look at sustainable building construction
View from above
Avarrus Architects have crafted a low key fascinating and sustainable apartment block in Helsinki.
Developed by Kestävät Kodit Oy who were started by Architects, Pauli Siponen and Niilo Ikonen founders of Avarrus seem at least partly involved directly then with the developers.

Before the 50’s and the Pihlajamäki Housing Estate Finnish buildings were largely built on site, but since then prefabrication has dominated.
The building takes many references to traditional Finnish apartment buildings. Especially in the treatment of the roof and eaves. Otherwise it’s more contemporary, especially treatment of windows and facades. The detail at the eaves being directly translated to the treatment of the window openings is a lovely and contemporary twist.
Whats really interesting is the construction methods used. The walls are built out of 60 to 75cm thick solid brick, this is a huge break from the norm.
Helsingin Muurarimestari is more than just a building; it is a statement. We are proving that traditional masonry can meet modern standards of sustainability and energy efficiency. This project is about preserving the craftsmanship of the past while embracing the environmental responsibilities of the present. -Niiko Ikonen

I am guessing there is slab and roof insulation but even so this is pretty impressive. I would like to know exactly what u-value they managed to achieve here.
Otherwise other things stick out. The type is point access, not so common nowadays but makes for better layouts. There is a natural ventilation system which is a sort of stack ventilation like chimneys without fireplaces. I also see radiators in the apartments so probably the building is connected to Helsinkis’ district heating system. Elsewhere breathable surface materials and as little plastic as possible mostly natural finishes.

All around a lovely sustainable building.
